This is a finished cavity tree (second from right with white markings in the middle).Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers (RCW) are unique among North American woodpeckers in that they excavate cavities only in living pines.  Typically the pines are greater than 80 years old, and it may take months to create a cavity.  So, in order to more rapidly grow a population DNR inserts artificial cavities (part of Joe's job).  The finished tree is spray-painted with white streaks to mimic the sap flow (a visual cue for the RCW) that would be typical of a natural excavated cavity.

Some pottery the kids and I found today at the farm. It's a great time to search the fields and firebreaks after these heavy rains. My very modest (and very possibly wrong) ID skills categorize the patterned piece as a Deptford Check Stamped, which would date to approximately 300 BC-600 AD. The small rim section I'm holding is also really neat. These came from a finger of high ground with creek drains on each side, and a high bluff above the main creek where we have a small field. We've found projectile points here dating back to the archaic period (up to 10,000 years old). Really cool to see blackened fire scars on some of the pottery, where I assume it lay among the wiregrass as fires burned through over the many centuries after it was discarded.

Happy 60th Mom

We traveled to Wildwood the first weekend in February to celebrate 

my Mom's 60th birthday (actually on 29Jan13).  

My sisters & I threw a party for her & had a great turn-out: lots of friends and family.  

Plus it snowed & the kids got to run wild in it!
